Tips for those considering cosmetic surgery
Cosmetic surgery isn’t just about changing your appearance, it goes deeper than that, it’s a significant and life changing choice that should be given due thought and consideration. Cosmetic procedures are often trivialised in the media but it is important to remember that they are no different to any other medical operation and, as such, finding the best surgeon and facility for your treatment is an essential part of the decision making process.
We know it may be daunting to make such a big decision, so here’s some tips to get you started:
- Do your research
Don’t be driven by hype. Thoroughly research the procedures available. Look for consultants who have a proven history in performing a certain procedure.
- Check your surgeon’s credentials
Ensure that the surgeon is on the specialist register with the General Medical Council. Look for a surgeon who is a member of BAAPS or BAPRAS.
- Talk to a past patient
Try and talk to people who have been through the procedure that you are considering.
- Go prepared for your consultation
The consultation is your opportunity to ask any questions you have – so make a list and take it with you.
- Be open-minded
Explain the problems you are experiencing or the changes you want to make. Bear in mind that the procedure you enquire about may not be the most suitable for you in order to achieve the results that you want.
- Meet the team
Ask the surgeon if you can meet the team who will be looking after you and get a good idea of where you’ll be cared for.
- Take your time
A good surgeon will give you time after your initial consultation so that you can thoroughly consider your options.
- See your GP
Talk through your plans with your GP. Good surgeons want to work closely with their patients’ GPs to ensure that they know medical histories and will keep them informed.
- Get a price
The hospital should offer a fixed price package that includes hospital fees, surgeon’s fees, anaesthetist’s fees, implant costs and all aftercare including dressings.
- Ongoing support
Find out what kind of aftercare you will get. Make sure your follow up care involves another appointment with your consultant. Ask what happens if you are unhappy with the results or if things don’t go to plan.
